Pop culture references have been a particular fixture in art for a period amazingly close to 50 years now. From Warhol’s “Coke Bottles” to Jeff Koons’ “Michael Jacksons,” artists have been mining nearly every form of recognizable imagery for its instant access to public memory and social commentary, as well as challenging the role of originality in art.
Nor is cultural topicality a new phenomenon. It shows up in Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling, Rembrandt’s merchant portraits, and most certainly in Daumier’s caricatures. Audiences would recognize the icons and clichés of their day, whether obvious or couched in metaphor. With our contemporary eyes, the immediacy of this meaning is obscured or lost and definitely altered, and thus artworks gain fresh new meanings when we layer them with our own peculiar brand of understanding or sentiment. The artist provided some clues, now we unravel them and create new stories of our own.
The possibilities of simultaneously common and divergent interpretations of cultural themes interests two artists who are showing concurrently in downtown venues. At the Fred Simon Gallery at the Nebraska Arts Council headquarters, “Brett Anderson, Printmaking” offers a long and perhaps last local look at the inventive, allegorical woodcuts and engravings of this Lincoln artist. Anderson, whose show runs through June 19, is soon departing for a teaching gig at Western Oregon University and, one hopes, a continued path to wider recognition. With its continued mission to show artists working in wood and paper now firmly established in its fabulous new location in the Old Market Passageway, Pulp Gallery is featuring the emblematic drawings and panel paintings of Omaha artist Stephen Azevedo in “A Sentimental History” through June 15.
Azevedo’s approach relies on a calculated belaboring of the obvious. Painted in oil and a thick overlay of resin on deep wood panels are an array of familiar images of iconic people or moments etched in the collective memories of many (slightly older) Americans: 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan in front of the stars and stripes, Christopher Reeve as filmdom’s Superman, daredevil Evel Knievel on his trademark Harley. President John F. Kennedy is depicted in his fateful Dallas motorcade, lifted from movie footage that masses of us have come to know frame by frame. Each image, sourced from the Internet and re-presented through the artist’s filter of memory, is not an exact reproduction, but our brains fill in the missing details with our own recollections and associations. For those who remember the Reagan era fondly, this image evokes his “Morning in America” involving individual freedom, pride in country and small government advocacy; for others, it may be a grim reminder of his administration’s redistribution of wealth, deficit spending and corporate deregulation that have contributed to our current economic crisis. Similarly, Azevedo’s charcoal portrait of heavyweight Mike Tyson in his glory days of undisputed championship may be simply nostalgic or a bittersweet memento of the ways in which he parlayed success and celebrity into criminal behavior and public ignominy.
The organizing theme of Azevedo’s Americana series, however, revolves around his images of guns. Interspersed between his pictures of our historical and celebrity icons are portraits in profile of some of our favorite personal firearms: a Beretta modified with duct tape, the Smith and Wesson .38 (Saturday Night Special), the Colt .45 (icon of the Old West), and the Walther PPK (the “James Bond” gun). To the enthusiast, they may be recognizable emblems of authority, protection or patriotism. To others the pistols may represent an eccentric national preoccupation or, more disturbingly, lionize violence and the proliferation of gang culture. “I am aware of the polarizing nature of guns in general,” said Azevedo, who selected them as subjects with these conflicts in mind. It’s one thing if some do not recognize Burt Reynolds from his comic-romantic turn in the car-chasing/beer-smuggling popcorn flick “Smokey and the Bandit.” It nonetheless fits a notion of stardom on a screen of some size. But recognize the pistol, make, model and manufacturer or not, there is no neutrality when it comes of the signification of a gun, nor little impartiality when it comes to opinions on its appropriateness as an art subject. It may seem an easy way to pull the audience’s trigger, but Azevedo wanted his images to come already loaded in order for the viewer to reconstruct their own meaning from the subject at hand.
There’s also something to tickle everyone’s imagination in the visually dynamic stories created by Anderson. Dogs, demons, singers, saints and sinners populate his fabulistic narratives, which he says are inspired by an “unhealthy exposure to Saturday morning cartoons, rock ‘n’ roll music and violent video games.” Add in winking references to art history, science fiction, contemporary events and personal anecdote, and you end up with a series of cleverly conceived, delightfully enigmatic and skillfully executed prints exploring the human condition through signs, symbols and allegories.
Take, for example, Anderson’s colorful and satirical woodcut “Exercising Demons.” Part Dürer’s “Melancholia,” part just about any Thomas Hart Benton image, the print features a man slumped in a lawn chair, nodding off during a lazy day of drinking. He is silhouetted against a background of rolling cropland, with a city (Lincoln?) in the distant horizon. This is no pastoral idyll, however, as an array of playful gremlins taunt him, one sucking on a straw stuck in the head of its dozing victim. Even before ads for Hulu, we knew that all sorts of temptations could turn our brains into mush.
Anderson easily acknowledges his penchant for the bizarre, which he finds along with his decidedly antiquated medium of printmaking to be a great vehicle for “expressing the vexations I have about our society.” In his artist statement, he explains that he prefers the harsh or grotesque, in both imagery and his choices of color and texture, as an effective way of subverting the appeal of a Disney-fied concept of the American dream, and strives to create “elaborate and wonderful facades which often conceal seedy, sinful, or pestilent underbellies” in our culture.
In “Arcadian Espionage,” a Biblical episode seems to be taking place. A red-headed woman crouches behind a rock at the lower right of the composition, peering into a kind of Eden-like landscape. Rabbits, rams, deer and tigers all gambol about bathed in the bright rays of the sun, but at their center stands a short, exceptionally hairy man (Cousin Itt meets John the Baptist?) offering a goose in one hand and a rocklike object in the other. The woman clearly plots a subterfuge to get the object of her desire, as we can see the gears in her mind literally turning in a thought bubble that looks like an old TV screen. It’s also a great analogue of our own processes of gazing and interpreting.
Amid the acridly colored, boldly expressive woodcuts for which Anderson is known is a new body of works in intaglio, both in black-and-white and color. They are often smaller and have a more delicate line than the woodcuts and are softer in color, but no less idiosyncratic. Several revisit his interest in portraiture and its longtime practices of using clothing, objects and setting to create personifications rather than mere likenesses of specific individuals. In “Scoutmaster,” Anderson riffs on the convention of the Medieval and Renaissance donor portrait, depicting a bald, heavily tattooed man with hands clasped in prayer. His nose, however, is a twig with an owl perched on it; atop his head is a wormy apple. As for being trustworthy, loyal, courteous and kind, this scout seems to be hedging on his oath: he’s got his fingers crossed and his nose is a bit reminiscent of Pinocchio’s.
Clearly, the symbolism of Anderson’s quirky and fictive fables hit the viewer in a manner that is less transparent than Azevedo’s approach. What they give up in directness of recognition, however, they gain in prolonged looking and thoughtful contemplation. Where Azevedo opts for casual representation because of his iconic subjects, Anderson clarifies his more obscure references through more complex and intricate renderings. Interestingly, both share a sense of uncertainty, for while each offers a view of life that may bring an easy smile, Azevedo’s symbols of popular culture may also be as distant or disruptive as the odd characters and apocalyptic backgrounds of many of Anderson’s prints. The signs are all there; it just depends how you read them.
