‘Sin Nombre’ puts a face on immigrants’ search for America

In our own self-interest, Americans tend to marginalize, politicize and demonize anyone who even resembles an illegal immigrant or alien. It’s easier that way. Build a high barbwire fence or wall of prejudice against anyone who we fear will threaten “our” way of life. Worse, we make scapegoats for much that ails America out of those who do not look, worship or talk like “us,” legal or otherwise.
As long as we confuse those who covet America with those “who hate us for our freedoms,” immigrants will be stereotyped as aliens rather than understood as human beings who share our dreams as well as our borders. As long as immigrants remain faceless, minus any individual identity, they can be treated as the enemy at the door rather than confronting the issues and causes that drove them there and bind us together as neighbors.
First time American director-writer Cary Joji Fukunaga understands this and dares to put a face on the reality of immigration into the United States south of the border with his harrowing and humane film, “Sin Nombre,” a big winner at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Though his characters are “without a name”— so are the actors for that matter — as treated by the media, politics and society in general, Fukunaga gives each an identity and backstory that is hard to ignore as these Central Americans migrate cross country via atop trains in a Mexican odyssey with Greek tragedy overtones. Crossing the Tex-Mex border, an event which traditionally gets all the attention in the United States, is almost anti-climactic for these pilgrims except for the two star-crossed leads, Casper (Edgar Flores), a disenfranchised gang member and Sayra (Paulina Gaitan), a doe-eyed innocent at the mercy of her fear and hormones.
Fukunaga constructs “Sin Nombre” as equal parts documentary and drama while avoiding the demeaning appellation of docudrama. A better tag might be family drama as it contrasts “dos las familias,” the very real international Latino street gang Mara Salvatrucha and a fictional Honduran family whose members, Sayra, her father and uncle, become fatally intertwined during train travel south from Chiapas. Casper is a young lieutenant in the gang who is beginning to stray even as he brings his 12-year-old friend, Smiley (Kristyan Ferrer), in the fold via a vicious initiation. Casper is preoccupied with his girlfriend and clearly sees himself in Smiley’s scared but eager to please eyes.
The cycle of violence continues as Smiley is then required to execute a rival gang prisoner. The execution is brutally matter-of-fact, but shots of dogs then feasting on the bloody remains are borderline gratuitous. Lil’ Mago (Tenoch Huerta Mejia), the tattooed and menacing gang leader keeps Casper in line with fear and intimidation even as he welcomes Smiley into the fold. “You are part of a family now,” he tells Smiley. “You have many brothers here.” But the arm that embraces Smiley reveals the fate of many by sporting a row of gravestones marked “R. I. P.” Despite the sensationalistic overtones at times, Fukunaga doesn’t spare the audience the harsh realities many immigrants face when confronted with few options and a similar future.
This includes Sayra and her family, who have traveled from Honduras as far as Chiapas in order to board illegally another train and eventually join their relatives in New Jersey. Like Casper, the teenage Sayra longs to be on her own, but her family ties, albeit better ones, are all she has. Inexorably, their lives are thrown together on top of that train. After Lil’ Mago’s major moves on Casper’s girlfriend end in her death, the numbed underling snaps when he next witnesses the gang leader terrorizing Sayra and her family during a daring raid atop the speeding train. Casper cuts the stunned Lil’ Mago’s throat and throws him overboard. He then releases the witness Smiley who returns to the gang, which begins a relentless cross country pursuit for revenge.
Casper and Sayra never quite become lovers, but she gives him the real friendship and respect he never got from the vicious gang or his new fellow travelers who don’t quite trust him. Casper knows his own fate has been sealed and he is reluctant to draw in the impressionable and appreciative Sayra ready to follow him anywhere. When he jumps ship, to his dismay she follows suit and the two meet an inevitable but poignant end on the banks of the Rio Grande. “Sin Nombre” manages to meld the plight of honest immigrants and the treachery of gangs who victimize their own with the redemption of Casper who finally earns himself an identity more real than his tag.
Fukunaga blends lyrical and gritty cinematography and naturalistic performances with realistic documentation of gang life and the risks of riding the rails to create a portrait of Latino immigration long before it reaches American borders. It also gives credibility to the every day laborer who landscapes, builds roads and fixes roofs, waits tables and house-keeps as they take this next step toward realizing their own version of the American Dream.
