Dundee Gallery offers variety of imagery from Wallace, Dennison

A year ago artists Paula Wallace and John Dennison collaborated with emerging artist Victoria Hoyt to create one of the most interesting exhibits of 2008, “Grimm Again.” The show was the best the Hot Shops Art Center had to offer due not only to the individual artistry of the three involved, but to the curatorial attention paid to the show’s theme, didactic material, lighting and grouping. It is what one expects from this professional art center and venue though only a few exhibits have achieved this degree of care and presentation since.

Now, painter and printmaker Wallace and ceramicist Dennison have taken their expertise to the Dundee Gallery at 4916 Underwood Ave. with “New Works” which continues until June 14. Though the exhibit lacks the same cohesive theme of “Grimm Again,” it doesn’t disappoint, either in sheer numbers offered or overall quality. “When John and Paula brought their work in I was almost overwhelmed not only be the quantity but by the professionalism,” gallery owner Jean Imray said. Though a commercial gallery, the Dundee has worked hard to show work outside the mainstream, and for the most part, this exhibit is no exception.

Wallace alone boasts more than 40 current oils of various sizes and four monotypes that grace the gallery’s expansive storefront. Anyone familiar with the work of the Hot Shops studio artist and instructor will recognize her character studies and caricatures inspired by literary, theater, music and spiritual sources. As the show’s liner notes accurately point out, her art is mostly figurative, emphasizing the human face in a range of styles that vary from the representational to the whimsical. You may not care for all her “family” on display here, but you will find favorites because of their accessibility and familiarity.

Dennison, on the other hand, includes 20 or so ceramic pieces, among them several decorative and sculptural bowls from his ongoing “Bowls Beyond Function” series. He also features a half dozen or more of his signature masks complete with iconic markings and extensions that evoke literary allusions, religious symbols and pop culture references. While the former are noteworthy for their abstract and geometric patterns, the latter are more expressionistic, combining both the primitive and preternatural with explorations of morality, race, music, the media and other modern topics.

While this exhibit lacks a strong unifying theme, it does allow for each artist to be appreciated for their differences in medium, style and POV. Their bios do reveal two similarities either in background or muse. Both admit to being motivated by literature, Wallace more narrative and character driven and Dennison more metaphoric and mythic. And, curiously, both hail from farm families, she a “true farmer’s daughter” and he milking Guernseys and shearing Shopshires. Whether milkmaid or farmhand, it conjures up images in art and reality of individuals with an earthy love of Nature and an appreciation for all things hand made, a label that seems to fit both artists.

All of Wallace’s work here is accompanied by lines from many of her favorite poets including Raymond Carver, Linda Pastan and Bruce Springsteen. Her accompanying images are largely characters that embody and interpret both the tone and theme of the excerpt on each painting’s label. A word about that. No one locally in recent memory pays more attention to the presentation of her and other’s art than Wallace, and she is ably assisted here by Imray and Jean Incontro of Visions Custom Framing in the creation of very sophisticated and pleasing labels on foam board. Overall, Wallace’s’ style is painterly and classic, precise and detailed, with a natural palette, paying more attention to facial expressions than costume, hair or background which further enhances the emotional connection she seeks and generally achieves with her subject.

Though she works primarily in oil, four standouts in her contribution also include her portraiture in monotype that adorns the front window. Unlike her softer, more delicate paintings, these male figures are rendered as rough, salt of the earth characters in a manner fitting the medium but not without detail or empathy. The monotypes include two black and white prints, “Tom Joad,” from the Springsteen song, and “Dan,” that connects to the lines from Ezra Pound: “O tender-heartedness right bitter grown…” Both of these lost and misunderstood souls effectively capture Wallace’s characteristically downcast gazes and sidelong glances of people on the edge or at their limit. Also, look for two dark and moody versions of “The Coming of Light” that face in and out of the gallery window. These back-to-back portraits reference lines from Mark Strand: “Even this late it happened—the coming of love, the coming of light.”

As for Wallace’s oils, the following are among the highlights. “Before the Exodus” depicts a tall forlorn male figure in rumpled white shirt and trousers who slumps downcast on the edge of hill or sea. Lines from Harry Shapiro quote: “This was before the miracle,” and poet Pastan responds, “One exodus prefigures the next.” It is a nicely meditative character study, melancholic and transitory, but one wonders if this scenario would have been better served by a wide, horizontal canvas which depicted his mood and isolation in the world rather than a vertical frame.

Two additional favorites are “Persephone Arrives” and “My Soul is a Light Housekeeper,” both of which are virtual companion pieces or responses to themes evoked in the above work. The first interprets lines from Nan Fry: “I just want to learn the language of return…” There is a wild abandon to the beauty of this woman with her upturned visage and red-lipped hint of a smile that more than suggests some deep longing or dark secret. The second work features another woman who interprets lines from Lawrence Raab with her own evocative beauty and air: “Why shouldn’t my house be my own, and my soul its keeper?” Substitute “heart” for “house” and with just a little imagination and critical license the melancholy of the above-mentioned male figure is better appreciated if not completely understood.

Wallace also offers many other smaller pieces, some in caricature such as the humorous “A Word to Husbands” and the enigmatic “She’s a Skeptic,” but her more realistic portraits are more engaging because of their depth with or without a line of poetry. Two particularly effective pieces are the folkloric “Penelope,” a three-quarter-side view of a woman wrapped in shawl or serape and “Late Fragment,” a similarly wrapped figure but the antithesis of our Penelope. In the former, lines from Pastan seem to bear out Penelope’s gaze off the frame: “What is faithfulness, anyway? Penelope asks.” Her dark and deep-set eyes and her heavy brow would indicate her question is not rhetorical. The second female figure is more subdued and vulnerable with one breast exposed beneath her diaphanous nightgown. The poet Raymond Carver asks her, “And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so?” “I did,” our lady responds, yet her demeanor here would suggest she is only deceiving herself.

While Wallace’s oils and prints are representational and interpretive of their literary sources, Dennison’s ceramics in the show are indirect and conceptual. Furthermore, Wallace’s POV is personal and emotional while Dennison remains detached and reserved. This is particularly true of his ceramic bowls that feature contrasting rough and smooth surfaces and textures, especially his experimental work with a crackling finish that resembles a parched desert floor or stretch of Macadam. Completing this dual combination of order and chaos is his use of carefully composed geometric, abstract patterns with organic, gestural lines. Several of the larger bowls are also marked by a single color of green, red or blue that pop out in relief.

An oddly, interesting exception to the carefully controlled work above, and a personal favorite as well, is titled “Conrad’s Garden II.” A real departure from Dennison’s more abstract pieces, this work conjures up a seascape or celestial inner or outer space complete with wavy vegetation and majestic spires on an atmospheric, lyrical background. Think of it as Middle Earth meets An Octopuses’ Garden. It is surreal and whimsical and unlike anything else the artist offers here. Also significant are his more familiar “White Black Mosaic” and a pair of four-sided, irregularly shaped smaller bowls with their rough ochre surface and simple geometric pattern entitled “Red Line” and Checkerboard.” This more minimalist, almost fragile work is also a pleasant surprise.

Always a pleasant shock, no matter how well you think you know them, are Dennison’s beauty in the beast masks, which evoke denizens of the deep as well as the supernatural. Confronting them is like experiencing a Kiss concert underwater, if such a thing were possible. Over time, Dennison’s marvelous masks of clay have gotten darker, edgier as he risks mixing his metaphors. Yet, somehow his larger-than-life masks work, held together by their creative, organic design and iconic extensions, in this case, teapots in Lewis Carroll fashion. Especially notable are his “Shaman with 3 Graces” and the paradoxical “Tea with Spike” which cleverly resembles “Pin Cushion,” the title character of the horror film from hell.

Though Wallace and Dennison have little in common here in tone, subject or medium, their ying and yang approach to source material complements each other quite well. They again share the same stage but this time it is a variety show rather than repertory.
