The Bard’s lovely language set to return to Elmwood

There’s a little bit of groundling in all of us. In the 16th century at the famous Globe Theater in London, many flocked to see Shakespeare’s popular plays, including the wealthy and the poor. Widely known as the master of theater, whiz of words and pro of poems, he especially loved the dirty, food-throwing groundlings — poor people who paid a penny to stand squished on the floor known as the pit.

Although visitors at Elmwood Park won’t throw food onstage, they’ll be sitting on blankets and chairs, eating sandwiches, drinking wine and socializing with friends. Shakespeare wrote his plays for the people, for the groundlings.

“You get to hear it like Shakespeare intended it to be, with the masses having fun, not in a rigid theater with chairs that you can’t move around,” marketing director Nellie MacCallum said. “The groundlings set up the whole connection to why it was made — who Shakespeare was appealing to.”

The annual Shakespeare on the Green festival put on by Nebraska Shakespeare is in its 23rd season. It’s a perfect way for families, friends and colleagues to share a long evening full of outdoor relaxation and fun.

Macbeth, chosen for its moral undertones, will be performed for two weekends, June 18-21 and 24-28. This is the third time the program is presenting Macbeth, done first in 1990, then in 1999.

“That’s what good art is all about,” MacCallum said. “It helps us give guide to how we live our lives. To remind us about values, to remind us about doing the right thing and what happens when you don’t.”

Director D. Scott Glasser has been with Shakespeare on the Green for 10 productions. He says Macbeth will be a little different because the conception of the play changes with new cast members. The play is still set in 11th century Scotland, but has some modern twists.
“There is a contemporary element,” Glasser said. “It’s fast-moving, explosive and vivid. [The play] shows the characters are driven so much by ambition that they do terrible things. It’s not necessarily good versus evil, but opening the possibilities that they could do these things.”

Glasser traveled to New York and Milwaukee to audition actors for the play. The two main actors are from New York, however, more than 10 members of the cast are from Omaha. Usually, at least six members of the company are from out of town.

In the past, Shakespeare on the Green has produced two plays that ran for three weeks. MacCallum said last fall Nebraska Shakespeare picked two plays, however, the economy and a huge budget cut – from $600,000 to $420,000 – caused one play to be nixed.

Shakespeare on the Green offers the performance free to the public and asks for donations. During the three-week run, the festival averages 30,000 people. Without corporate sponsorships, it averages out to $20 to $25 a head to offset the costs.

“This is a popular play of Shakespeare’s, so we hope people will enjoy it,” Glasser said. “It’s something unique and special for the Omaha community.”

Even though there are fewer performances, the entertainment before the play will still be plentiful. Bagpipes from Omaha Pipes and Drums, Magical Singers from University of Nebraska at Omaha, Heartland Community Flute Choir and other small groups and entertainers will perform in the Towne Square at 6 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m., a couple members of the cast will answer questions from the audience about Macbeth during a seminar on a smaller stage. Actors from Camp Shakespeare, a two-week long workshop teaching kids from ages 8 to 18 about Shakespeare’s language and plays, will perform June 26-28. There will be two performances per night: an indoor show at 6 p.m. in UNO’s Weber Fine Arts building and an outdoor show at 7 p.m.

On June 21, the second-annual Will’s Best Friend Contest will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dressed up dogs will strut on a runway and seven winners will be named, from best Shakespeare character to friendliest dog. T-shirts, treats, water bowls, Frisbees, tennis balls and coupons are the prizes available for participating pets and owners.

Food from Cubby’s will be available to purchase, including prepared picnic baskets with wine and food for two from $20 to $35. Call a day ahead to order a basket. Scooter’s will serve coffee, lattes and smoothies.

While groundlings were too poor to enjoy wine or lattes, they enjoyed Shakespeare’s plays even in the cramped space. Elmwood Park is a big, beautiful place to share an intimate or casual evening and listen to the lovely language of Shakespeare.
